SeeAct AI: embodied AI's endgame is robots that retrain themselves

A Chinese robotics startup founded this year is arguing that the next leap in physical AI will not come from bigger models or more human demonstrations, but from letting robots generate and bank their own experience. Also today: iFlytek's industrial arm ships a small energy model built to run on the factory floor. Yao Mu, an assistant professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has founded SeeAct AI to bet that embodied intelligence ends in reward-driven self-evolution rather than more…

Qualcomm buys the MoveIt robotics stack and promises to keep it open

The chip vendor bought the middleware that most robots in research and industry are actually planned with — and the promise to keep it open is now the part that matters. Meta shipped the smallest AI hardware at Connect, and OpenAI took its ad business into Southeast Asia. Qualcomm will acquire PickNik Inc., the Boulder company that has stewarded the MoveIt manipulation framework since its Willow Garage days, and says MoveIt 1 and MoveIt 2 will remain open source under their existing license.

Zoox grounds its Atlanta fleet after drivers got sick in the cars

Amazon's robotaxi unit has halted testing in Atlanta while it works out what made its safety drivers sick inside the vehicles — and Intel spent its China conference shipping hardware for robots instead of talking about the CPU squeeze underneath them. Zoox has grounded its autonomous test fleet in Atlanta after safety drivers were potentially exposed to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide inside the cars last month, according to a TechCrunch investigation published Wednesday.

UK and US sign an AI pact — and fire a torpedo from a robot sub

Three guardrail stories landed on the same Tuesday, and only one of them came from a government interested in slowing anything down: a defence pact between two allies, a state cabinet in Illinois, and an independent testing institute for children's AI. The UK and the US have launched a joint AI and autonomy partnership to protect critical national infrastructure, in the same week the two countries fired a torpedo from an uncrewed undersea vessel for the first time.

Toyota wants 400,000 factory robots trained by its own workers

Toyota is rebuilding its factories around robots it built itself, and the teaching method is its own workforce. China's chip makers spent the same week arguing that the model belongs on the device, not in a data centre. Toyota wants 400,000 factory robots — and its own workers are the training set. The Toyota Motor group plans to put 400,000 in-house-developed robots into production sites worldwide as its factories are rebuilt, Nikkei Asia reported, with the automaker pitching the result as…

Google's Intrinsic open-sources its robot control stack

Two physical-AI stories landed on the same day, and together they draw the line the industry is converging on: the software layer is going free, and the sensing layer is going into the hands of one buyer. Alphabet's Intrinsic open-sourced Intrinsic Core, the runtime, SDK and real-time control framework it had been keeping in-house — an Apache-2.0 layer that handles trajectory adjustment mid-movement, 6-DoF pose estimation, collision-avoidance motion planning, grasp planning, simulation and…

Local opposition blocked $68B of US data centers in one quarter

Two hard numbers landed today on the two most-hyped physical bets in AI — the buildings that train the models and the robots meant to work in them. Both came in far smaller than the money already committed to them. Local opposition blocked or delayed 45 US data center projects worth $68 billion between April and June — more than half of every large-scale development the research group Data Center Watch tracked in the quarter.

Tsinghua open-sources RPent, an agent layer for real robots

Two open-source releases today point the same direction: the interesting work is no longer in the model itself, but in the scaffolding around it. A Tsinghua-led team published the layer that sits between a frontier model and a robot's motors — and a leaderboard to show it lifts a frozen policy. A solo developer, meanwhile, trained a small continual-learning model on a laptop GPU and documented what it forgets. A Tsinghua-led group open-sourced RPent, a framework that turns a general model into…

Tesla audits Chinese suppliers for 50,000 Optimus robots in 2026

Two hard numbers landed this morning: the unit count Tesla wants from its humanoid line next year, and the price it is engineering the robot down to. Separately, the UN Security Council gets a briefing from OpenAI's chief. Tesla sent a four-department team into Ningbo on September 16 and opened a mass-production audit of its Optimus suppliers the next day — with orders already placed, and a 2026 plan to build roughly 50,000 humanoid robots.
