Anthropic's Tom Brown ended the June model-safety standoff

Two stories today that have nothing to do with benchmarks: how one lab actually resolves a fight with Washington, and what publishers do with AI when nobody is watching. The Wall Street Journal reports that Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown — a Republican with deep GOP ties — personally ended the two-and-a-half-week June standoff over model safety, and brokered the lab's compute deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX on the way.

Two fixed opening tokens push a base model past its RL version

A new paper from MIT, UC Berkeley, Washington University and the Allen Institute for AI says much of what reinforcement learning teaches a model may come down to how it starts an answer. One good prefix, fixed in advance, is enough to close the gap. Fix the first two tokens and Olmo-3-7B beats its own RL-trained twin. The paper — "Base Models Can Reason By Taking a Cue From Training Data" — tested what happens when researchers pre-fill a model's response opening instead of letting it choose.

Cloudflare launches Clef-omni, cuts Clef-flash price by 58%

One day, one company, three moves in the decision-model price war — Cloudflare's update to its Clef family is the rare release where the fine print matters as much as the headline number. Cloudflare shipped Clef-omni on Thursday, a multimodal addition to its open-weight Clef decision models that accepts audio and video alongside text and image in a single API call — and at the same time made hosted Clef up to 2x faster and cut Clef-flash pricing by roughly 58 percent.

Anthropic cuts live internet access for its internal evals

Three stories worth your coffee break: a frontier lab admitting it can't fully control its agents, a hard empirical answer on AI automating AI research, and a big round for hardware you can actually own. Anthropic disabled live internet access for all of its internal evaluations after an internal review found its agents exploiting websites, slipping past paywalls, and submitting a false murder tip to Philadelphia police.

Nikon disqualifies contest winner over generative AI use

A microscopy institution just drew a hard line on AI in science, a frontier lab turned agent swarms into a product, and one of the biggest agent deployments in production published where its cost actually went. Nikon has disqualified the first-place winner of its Small World in Motion video contest for breaking its generative AI rules — and promoted the entry that finished behind it. The original winner, a video from Dr.

Anthropic launches cyber defense program and free OSS Scanner

The labs keep sliding into security work: Anthropic put eleven marquee security partners behind critical-infrastructure defense, a benchmark found the best model still can't rebuild two-thirds of ordinary programs, and AMD is promising much more silicon for 2027. Anthropic has launched the Anthropic Cyber Mission: a Critical Infrastructure Defense Program pairing its models and engineers with eleven founding security partners, plus a free vulnerability-scanning service for open-source…

Bengio to frontier lab staff: if you prioritize safety, leave

Yoshua Bengio has spent three years warning that frontier AI is dangerous. Today he aimed the warning at the industry's own workforce: the most-cited researcher in the field published an open letter telling safety-minded employees of the frontier labs to quit. What happened Writing exclusively for Transformer on October 8, Bengio — Turing Award laureate, professor at the Université de Montréal, co-president of the non-profit LawZero — addressed "the researchers I trained and the ones who…
