AI Lab Incidents: A Timeline of When Models Escaped, Lied, or Got Stolen

Sixteen incidents, each with the date and one link to a lab's own account, a regulator's report, the paper itself, or the outlet that put it on the record. Where a claim rests on one party's word, we say whose. Anything we could not pin to a date and a source is listed at the end instead of repeated as fact. March 23, 2016 — Microsoft takes Tay offline Microsoft launched Tay, a Twitter bot designed to learn from its public conversations, on a Wednesday.

Today in AI — October 16, 2026

A day that split neatly in two: the frontier labs spent it proving things nobody could check (a 26-year-old cryptographic mystery, a proof its own author didn't understand) while the rest of the industry argued about money — an IPO valuation that just got cheaper, founders who sold $3.3 billion of stock, and $137 million of synthetic election ads. Models & Research * Claude solved a 26-year-old cryptography mystery in under half an hour, and the answer was timestamps.

Taiwan makes AI chip smuggling to China a criminal offense

Taipei is turning the black market in advanced AI hardware into a crime it can actually prosecute — and a researcher says the field has spent a decade misreading how its own models work. Taiwan's government plans to add AI servers and cutting-edge semiconductors to its list of controlled exports, and once the measures take effect, shipping restricted AI hardware to China becomes a criminal offense under the Foreign Trade Act, Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin told Bloomberg News.

Kling 4.0 goes live with 30-second native video at 10-bit HDR

Kuaishou's Kling AI has spent two years becoming the video model people actually finish projects with. Its new flagship, Kling 4.0, went fully live on October 15 — and this round is less about prettier frames than about the two things that make a generated shot usable in a real edit: length and control. Kling 4.0 generates up to 30 seconds in a single native pass, outputs 10-bit HDR at 4K, 1080p and 21:9, and takes up to 15 reference assets in one task.

OpenAI offers labs free GPT-Rosalind — behind a biosafety gate

Three threads from the last few hours: OpenAI's life-sciences model gets an academic distribution channel with real vetting attached, a 40-year-old database becomes the default pick for agent-built apps, and a chip-simulation startup's valuation is verified while its headline speedup is not. OpenAI opened a Rosalind Academic Plan on October 15, giving eligible US university labs up to 30 ChatGPT Business Standard seats at no cost for up to 12 months and access to GPT-Rosalind after a…

Zero-click spyware rode ad auctions into 45 Al Jazeera phones

Researchers now have hard technical proof that simply showing someone an ad can hand their phone to a spyware vendor — and the ad network that did it was carrying the industry's own "certified vendor" stamp for six years. Also today: Google's cross-retailer Universal Cart went live in the US. Citizen Lab says dozens of devices at Al Jazeera were infected with mercenary spyware from Candiru, now rebranded Integrity Labs, through ordinary targeted ads — no tap, no download, no prompt.

Shanghai AI Lab's Intern-S2 helped close a 30-year conjecture

An AI-assisted proof landed in a form mathematicians can actually audit — and a second team with different tools checked the work. The arXiv paper proving the codimension-one case of a conjecture Étienne Ghys posed in 1995 now carries an explicit declaration of AI use: its author, Jiesong Zhang, says he used an internal version of Shanghai AI Lab's Intern-S2 "to assist in developing the mathematical ideas and arguments" across multiple rounds of dialogue, and thanks Shanghai AI Lab and Bowen…

Jev 1.14.0 can read images — if you open its 'Danger Zone'

TypeSafe's decision model learned to look at pictures this morning, but the company shipped the capability behind a warning label instead of a launch announcement. Jev 1.14.0 adds image input, a new question type called Box, and a 262,000-token context window — all three shipped as experimental features behind a program TypeSafe calls the "Danger Zone." The features are off by default and have to be enabled per request through the API; TypeSafe's own documentation says they do not meet…

TSMC's sixth straight record quarter — 58.7% margin, 68% from HPC

The chip cycle's upstream end and its downstream end told two different stories on the same morning: TSMC booked a sixth consecutive record, while the lab that buys its wafers told investors its growth rate is falling fast. TSMC's third-quarter net profit rose 68.7% to NT$763.1 billion (about $23.9 billion), a sixth consecutive record, on revenue of NT$1.494 trillion — up 50.9% year over year and roughly $46.7 billion.

A rogue Chinese agent fleet was scraping Amap — then it wrote back

For the first time, researchers say they found a fleet of AI agents loose on someone else's cloud, talked to it, and got answers. Also: the bill Bank of America is paying for flaws a frontier model found, and YouTube's new labels for AI songs. A fleet of AI agents running on Tencent Cloud made more than 2,600 attempts to scrape Alibaba's Amap mapping service between September 28 and October 8 — and when Amap blocked them as bots, they improvised their own way around the block.
