Mistral raises €3B in Europe's largest tech round to push sovereign AI

Three years after launch, Mistral has closed the biggest private funding round in European tech history — and it's spending it on data centers it owns, not just models. Mistral raised €3 billion ($3.5 billion) at a post-money valuation above €21 billion, the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund — the EU-backed vehicle managed by EQT — and existing investor PSG Equity.

Meta's AI appetite turns it into a top Microsoft Azure customer

Two product launches and a privacy reckoning lead the AI desk today. Meta is now one of Microsoft's largest AI customers, spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year on Azure to run trillions of AI tokens every week. According to a Bloomberg report carried by Techmeme and reposted across Chinese outlets, Meta's own AI ambitions have made it a major buyer of rival Microsoft's cloud — a striking turn for a company building its own data centers and custom AI silicon.

WiFi routers can identify you with 99.5% accuracy — no device needed

The router in the corner of the room just became a surveillance tool. New research from Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology shows ordinary WiFi networks can identify who's in a room with near-perfect accuracy — no cameras, no special sensors, and no device required on the person being tracked. Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) demonstrated that standard WiFi routers can identify individuals with 99.5 percent accuracy, using nothing but the unencrypted signals…

Databricks closes $5B round at $190B valuation

Thursday's biggest AI-business story is a private-market statement: Databricks closed another $5 billion round — this one at a $190 billion valuation — while Anthropic and Redwood Research shipped a benchmark index for the kind of reasoning that can't be empirically verified, and the White House opened the door for private firms to run offensive cyber operations. Databricks closed a $5 billion funding round at a $190 billion valuation on Thursday — six months after raising the same amount at…

UK police bring live facial recognition to the London Underground

Britain's transport police are taking live facial recognition into the London Underground, while Ant Group doubles down on the other end of embodied AI — funding robots that feel their way through the physical world. British Transport Police has expanded its live facial recognition trial into London Underground stations, scanning passengers in real time against a watchlist of people wanted for serious offences including sexual offences, robbery and knife crime.

WA police facial recognition trial scanned 130,000 faces

Australia's first live police facial recognition deployment is quietly scanning tens of thousands of people in Perth — and the backlash is already here. Also in this brief: Beijing anoints its first official lab for embodied-AI models, and Korea's KT commits billions to a 1GW data center buildout. Western Australia Police's live facial recognition trial has scanned more than 130,000 people in Perth and Fremantle since June, in the first deployment of its kind by an Australian police force.

Clothing that defeats AI surveillance hits Kickstarter

Def Con week ended with a working answer to the question that has hovered over AI surveillance for years: yes, a pattern printed on fabric can stop cameras from detecting you — and now you can buy it. A Kansas City security researcher says he has produced computer-generated patterns that stop AI surveillance cameras from detecting people, faces, and vehicles — and he demonstrated them at Def Con before putting the patterns on Kickstarter.
