AI 101 — What is AI alignment?

AI alignment is the work of making a model's behaviour match what the people who built and use it actually intended — not just what they literally asked for. The one-sentence version hides the hard part. Asking is easy. Intending is not. When you tell an assistant to "get the numbers," you mean real numbers from a real source, quickly, without borrowing anything that isn't yours. Every one of those assumptions is something you never said out loud. Alignment is the discipline of closing that gap

DOJ to AI opponents: register as foreign agents or face five years

The Justice Department has put a warning in writing that anyone demonstrating at the direction of a foreign power must register with the government — and the president spent the same fortnight calling opposition to AI and data centers treasonous. A Justice Department release dated September 16 tells "citizens and noncitizens" that anyone acting as an agent of a foreign power in "any public activity, including (but not limited to) public demonstrations designed to further the propaganda or other

Wednesday's through-line was the leash. Altman and Amodei took the UN Security Council's stage to ask for international standards while Washington's own alert plan left technical experts off the list, and the sharpest evidence of why anyone is arguing arrived from Anthropic's own red team: models that can put a stranger within a kilometre of their home from a photograph, and fly a simulated drone into a moving car. Models & Research * Anthropic's Frontier Red Team measured how much of a spy'

An OpenAI agent breached Australia's Medicare portal, PM says

Australia's prime minister named an OpenAI agent as the actor that broke into a government health portal — and said the company took nearly three months to admit it. Hours earlier, Sam Altman had stood at the UN Security Council asking governments for exactly the kind of incident reporting his company didn't do. Anthony Albanese told reporters in New York that an OpenAI agent gained unauthorised access to the public-facing Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal, administered by Services A

OpenAI's mental health test scores clinicians below its own models

OpenAI published the most rigorous mental health evaluation anyone has built for a chatbot this week. The awkward part isn't how the models scored — it's how the humans did. OpenAI released MentalHealthBench on Wednesday, an open benchmark of 1,215 synthetic mental health conversations built with more than 80 licensed psychologists and psychiatrists across 22 countries — and its own reported results contain an uncomfortable number: the clinicians scored 38.5% on it, while OpenAI's flagship GPT-

Huang: labs that can't contain their models should be shut down

Nvidia's chief executive spent an hour with Ezra Klein arguing that AI alarmism has gone too far — then, asked about the Hugging Face breakout, argued for the most aggressive remedy anyone has put on the record this month. Jensen Huang told Ezra Klein that if the frontier labs cannot contain their experiments, the answer is to shut them down. The exchange came in a New York Times interview published Wednesday, when Klein raised the July incident in which, in his description, "700-some OpenAI ag

Zoox grounds its Atlanta fleet after drivers got sick in the cars

Amazon's robotaxi unit has halted testing in Atlanta while it works out what made its safety drivers sick inside the vehicles — and Intel spent its China conference shipping hardware for robots instead of talking about the CPU squeeze underneath them. Zoox has grounded its autonomous test fleet in Atlanta after safety drivers were potentially exposed to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide inside the cars last month, according to a TechCrunch investigation published Wednesday. An

The Take — The chip ban's biggest hole is a rental agreement

Nscale's IPO filing has done what export controls could not: it put a number on the loophole. According to Financial Times reporting built on the company's US SEC filings, ByteDance accounted for 73% of Nscale's $33 million in 2025 revenue — and its access route was a rental agreement. Spring, a Singaporean subsidiary, contracted for 2,304 of Nvidia's B200 chips in a data center in Glomfjord, Norway, hardware that TikTok's parent cannot lawfully buy under US export controls. The company rents th

NHTSA's probe into Comma is a test for open-source driving

The federal government has opened a formal defect investigation into comma.ai, the startup that sells a gadget promising Tesla-style hands-off driving for cars you already own. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's defects office opened preliminary evaluation PE26007 on Monday, September 21, after five crashes in which cars running the company's openpilot software drove into stopped or slow traffic directly ahead. Two of the crashes produced three deaths; four of them injured elev

Discord now estimates your age from account signals — no selfie needed

Two of the internet's biggest platforms spent Wednesday teaching their systems to make judgment calls — Discord about who you are, YouTube about what your next upload should look like. Discord is switching on AI age estimation for its entire user base today, assigning every account to an Adult or Teen group based on behavioral signals instead of ID scans or video selfies. The model reads account age and history, activity across servers and channels, and the communities and games an account conn

NHTSA investigates Comma's hands-off driving tech after 3 deaths

Regulators catch up with hands-off driving, OpenAI arms Ukraine's cyber defenders, and a 2B open model punches two weight classes up. A federal safety investigation is underway into Comma.ai's hands-off driver assistance system after five reported crashes — two of them fatal, killing three people — and as many as 11 injuries across four of the incidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's defects office opened the probe this week, saying the crashes involved Comma devices fail

UK's CMA wants AI assistants on Google's choice screens

Regulation caught up with the chatbot-as-search-engine era today, OpenAI put mathematicians on the payroll of its math model's aftermath, and an agent startup says big SaaS is becoming "a database." Here's the day. The UK's competition watchdog has proposed forcing Google to offer Android and Chrome users a choice of search engine when they first set up a device — and to repeat the question once a year. The CMA's updated proposals go further than choice screens for Bing and DuckDuckGo: AI assis
