AI 101 — What is federated learning?

Federated learning is a way to train one shared AI model across thousands of devices or organisations without ever collecting their data in one place — each participant trains a copy on data it already holds, and only a summary of what that training learned travels back. The name comes from the word "federation": a group of independent members cooperating under one agreed protocol while each keeps its own affairs. The data stays where it lives.

Xiaomi's HySparse2 cuts million-token prefill compute fivefold

Xiaomi's model team previewed its next flagship with an architecture paper, and the numbers are about the bill the agent era runs up. Anthropic, meanwhile, wants its founders to keep control of the company after it lists. Xiaomi published HySparse2, the sparse-attention architecture its next flagship MiMo-V3 will use — claiming the design cuts prefill computation 5.02× at a million tokens versus the hybrid sliding-window attention in today's MiMo-V2 family.

New Jersey fines an AI data center $1.07M over 62 gas generators

The enforcement bill for the "bring your own power" data center buildout just arrived in New Jersey — and it came with a number small enough to be telling. Meanwhile, Tokyo's Sakana AI put the man who invented the LSTM on its letterhead. New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection has fined DataOne $1.07 million for installing 62 natural-gas generators at its Vineland site without a preconstruction permit, and for running them without a valid operating certificate.

Scammers are poisoning ChatGPT's answers with fake support numbers

A stealth security startup says it found hundreds of companies whose AI answers hand users scam contact details. The attack class is real and documented by others; the specific number is one vendor's word. Also today: light instead of copper inside AI clusters, and a small round aimed at what agents are allowed to do. Vigilance Security's researchers say they built a detector that queries ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overview about hundreds of large companies and scores the sources behind…

Anthropic's next gigawatt is TPUs — and Google may guarantee it

Three stories about who pays for AI: a lab whose next data centre may arrive with a credit guarantee from its chip supplier, a government renaming the technology in its own internal cables, and an Indian studio platform that just priced at $2 billion. Anthropic is in early talks to lease up to 1 gigawatt of compute from Stream Data Centers, and the discussions have included the possibility of Google providing a credit guarantee for the project, The Information reported Tuesday.

America has turned against data centers — Pew finds 54% now call them bad for the environment

Three stories about who absorbs AI's costs: the communities hosting the compute, the countries deciding whether to pick a superpower's side — or neither — and the creators being asked to like it. American opinion on data centers has swung sharply negative in eight months: 54% now say the facilities are mostly bad for the environment, up from 39% in January, according to a Pew Research Center survey published Tuesday.

Firebird's Armenia AI factory lands 70,000 Nvidia chips by 2027

A data center that doubles as a diplomatic instrument, and a quiet upgrade to the tool most people already use to run models on a laptop. Firebird's data center in Armenia is set to reach 300 megawatts and more than 70,000 Nvidia chips by the end of 2027 — hardware that Bloomberg reports the Trump administration agreed to let into the country as part of a wider diplomatic push. The San Francisco startup began operating the facility in August.
