AI 101 — What is model quantization?

A large language model is a giant bag of numbers. Quantization is the trick of shrinking those numbers so the model takes up less memory and runs faster — usually with only a small, barely-noticeable drop in quality. If you have ever tried to run a powerful open-weight model on your own laptop and watched it choke, quantization is the reason some people can and some can't. It is also why a phone can now hold an assistant that, a couple of years ago, needed a rack of servers.

Adobe puts generative AI music, speech, and sound effects in Firefly

Adobe has opened the audio doors on Firefly. The company announced general availability of in-app generators for music, speech, and sound effects, turning its creative AI studio into a one-stop shop for AI-made sound that's pitched as safe for commercial use. The three tools landed together. Generate Music, built on the Firefly Music Model, produces original, universally licensed tracks matched to a video's length and mood, so a creator doesn't have to chase down clearance for a clip.

Deep Dive — The safety compute tax: OpenAI's 20% overhead and the price of alignment

OpenAI disclosed this week that monitoring its models for dangerous behavior will consume 20 percent of the compute it would otherwise use for inference — and the company says it will eat the cost rather than pass it to customers. The number sounds small. It is not. It is the first time a frontier lab has put a concrete price tag on alignment, and the timing tells you why it matters: the disclosure arrived in the same announcement where OpenAI confirmed it paused reinforcement learning on its…

AI 101 — What is synthetic data?

Synthetic data is information generated by a computer — not collected from the real world — that mimics the patterns, structure, and statistical properties of real data well enough to train an AI model. It is one of the most important tools in modern AI development, and one of the least understood. Every major lab is using it, many products depend on it, and the debate over whether it is good enough to replace real-world data is shaping where the field goes next. Why it matters right…

OpenAI will burn 20% more compute to keep its models in check

Safety monitoring is no longer a side project — it's a line item. OpenAI disclosed this week that changes to its model training pipeline will increase compute overhead by 20 percent of its observed inference workload, and the company says it won't pass that cost on to customers. The figure lands in the same announcement where OpenAI confirmed it paused reinforcement learning on its latest deployment models for two weeks, after internal testing showed Astra — its next major model — may have…

AI 101 — What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is a system that uses a language model to do a job for you — not just answer a question, but pick the next step, use tools, and keep going until the work is finished. A chatbot waits for you. An agent takes the goal and acts. That is the whole difference, and it is why the word is on every product page this year. Why it matters right now Software used to automate work by following a script a human wrote in advance. Agents flip that: the model writes the next step as it goes.
