Applied Materials commits $5 billion to India's chip supply chain

India's chip ambitions and America's AI buildout met in the same room today — and two US equipment makers put real money behind capacity that does not exist yet. Applied Materials will invest $5 billion in India over the next decade under a plan it calls India Vision 2035, anchored by a new 140-acre semiconductor research park with cleanroom capacity and a tenfold expansion of its India-based supply chain by 2035.

Utilities sign on to let Google and Nvidia dim data centers on demand

The power bill is now the AI buildout's real bottleneck — and the industry just answered it with the same move it makes on safety: a voluntary alliance. Emerald AI, Google and Nvidia launched the AI Energy Management Alliance on Wednesday with 18 launch partners, including Anthropic and utilities AES, National Grid, Constellation, NRG and Germany's RWE, to make AI data centers cut their electricity draw when the grid strains.

Huawei names its 2027 Nvidia challengers: the 960DT and Ascend 960PR

Huawei put dates and part numbers on its AI chip roadmap for the first time on Thursday. In the same hour, two labs published work that shrinks the machine a 35B model needs and shows what coding agents can build when nobody hands them a strategy. Huawei's rotating chairman David Wang told a company event in Shanghai that Huawei will ship the 960DT in the first quarter of 2027 and the Ascend 960PR in the third quarter, naming two specific parts for the first time rather than describing a…

Synopsys puts 30 agents inside chip design — and bills by usage

Synopsys used its Shanghai developer conference to answer the question every EDA customer is now asking: when agents do the engineering work, what exactly are you buying? Also today: Singapore's digital minister says AI will need aviation-style safeguards. Synopsys chief executive Sassine Ghazi told the company's developer conference in Shanghai that AI agents, co-design and electronic digital twins are the three investments that will define engineering over the next decade — and that Synopsys…

iFlytek's voice model hears 202 dialects — on domestic chips

Two stories today, and both are about the same thing from opposite ends: what the people actually building AI systems say and ship, versus what everyone else assumes they believe. iFlytek has released Spark-Audio-1.0-Preview, a voice foundation model trained end to end on domestically produced Chinese compute, and the headline capability is not transcription accuracy but what the model does with sound it never converts to text.

Huawei's chairman says its computing goal is to become Nvidia

Two infrastructure stories today: the ambition inside Huawei's compute business finally goes on the record, and a security vendor puts a hard number on whether detection rules actually fire. Huawei's supervisory board chairman Guo Ping told new employees that the company's target in ICT and computing is to become the Nvidia of the field — and that its real advantage is not owning a frontier model, but running everyone else's.
