Today in AI — September 26, 2026

Saturday's through-line was who sets the terms: the two governments agreed to call the technology "super intelligence" and open a channel for incidents, Chinese open-weight models crossed into the majority of tokens on the developer gateways that measure such things, and the most interesting engineering of the day happened in the layers nobody markets — the agent harness, the kernel, the SSD. Models & Research * Nvidia's SoL-Pi cuts coding-agent token use by roughly half by having a…

NVIDIA's 100M-param diarizer tops the speaker-label leaderboard

NVIDIA quietly shipped the missing half of speech AI this week: not what was said, but who said it. Nemotron 3 Diarization is a 100-million-parameter open-weight model that labels up to eight speakers in live or recorded audio, and it arrives ranked first on VoiceArena's initial Diarization-Bench. Across 139 English conversations totalling roughly 22 hours, it scored a 14.72% diarization error rate against 19.3% for the next-best of the 12 systems evaluated — about a 24% relative gap — with…

Alibaba's CUDA alternative opens to outside developers

Alibaba spent its Apsara conference showing off silicon. The more consequential announcement came the day after, when it opened the software that decides whether anyone can actually use it. T-Head, Alibaba's chip subsidiary, published a fresh round of open-source releases for T-Head SAIL on September 23 — the CUDA-style stack that sits between PyTorch and its homegrown Zhenwu accelerators — one day after unveiling the Zhenwu V900, which Alibaba CEO Wu Yongming called the most compute-capable…

Ex-Tesla Dojo chip startup DensityAI is in talks at a $10B valuation

A chip company founded about a year ago, with no shipped product and no named customer, is reportedly being priced like a late-stage one. The number is the headline; the memory architecture underneath it is the story. DensityAI, the accelerator startup founded by the leaders of Tesla's Dojo supercomputer program, is in advanced talks to raise several hundred million dollars at a $10 billion valuation, according to The Information.

Black Forest Labs' 7B robot model beats models twice its size

Black Forest Labs took its video model into robotics and put it on top of NVIDIA's robot benchmark — with a model small enough to run on the machine itself. Also today: Databricks buys its way into spreadsheets, and India's Sarvam claims a document-AI record. Black Forest Labs released FLUX 3 Action, an open world-action model for robots that tops NVIDIA's RoboLab-120 leaderboard at 42.9% success with only seven billion parameters.

arXiv just funded its independence — as AI floods its queue

arXiv just stopped being a university project. On September 23 the preprint server announced $17.2 million in multiyear commitments from the Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets, and the Siegel Family Endowment, funding its first years as an independent nonprofit. The timing is not a coincidence: the same platform now absorbs more than 28,000 submissions a month, and computer science — AI work above all — is nearly half of them. The money is the smallest part of this story; the load is…

Zoox grounds its Atlanta fleet after drivers got sick in the cars

Amazon's robotaxi unit has halted testing in Atlanta while it works out what made its safety drivers sick inside the vehicles — and Intel spent its China conference shipping hardware for robots instead of talking about the CPU squeeze underneath them. Zoox has grounded its autonomous test fleet in Atlanta after safety drivers were potentially exposed to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide inside the cars last month, according to a TechCrunch investigation published Wednesday.

The Take — The chip ban's biggest hole is a rental agreement

Nscale's IPO filing has done what export controls could not: it put a number on the loophole. According to Financial Times reporting built on the company's US SEC filings, ByteDance accounted for 73% of Nscale's $33 million in 2025 revenue — and its access route was a rental agreement. Spring, a Singaporean subsidiary, contracted for 2,304 of Nvidia's B200 chips in a data center in Glomfjord, Norway, hardware that TikTok's parent cannot lawfully buy under US export controls.
