Today in AI — August 26, 2026

It was an earnings-day closer for the books: Nvidia doubled to its biggest-ever quarter, security vendors are riding an AI-threat supercycle, and the PC and cloud stacks both showed how the boom is really shaping demand. Industry * Nvidia turned in its largest quarter on record, with revenue up 106% year over year to $96.2 billion as data-center revenue jumped 117% to $89 billion — proof of an AI-spending inflection point, with net income more than doubling to $59.7 billion and…

Nvidia's Vera Rubin posts a 30x agentic jump in first hardware tests

Nvidia just put real numbers on its next flagship. At Hot Chips 2026 the company published the first silicon-level benchmarks for the Vera Rubin NVL72 rack, and it ran them on DeepSeek-V4-Pro — a 1.6-trillion-parameter open-weights model — doing agentic coding work rather than canned chatbot queries. Against the current GB300 NVL72, Nvidia claims up to 30 times more throughput per megawatt and per-token costs cut by as much as 35 times. The comparison baseline matters as much as the headline…

Perplexity's Portable Computer runs AI agents entirely offline

Perplexity and Nvidia are making the most aggressive push yet to pull AI agents off the cloud: a desktop app where the model, your files, and the work itself never have to leave the machine — and the token meter never moves. Perplexity launched Portable Computer on Monday, a version of its agentic Computer platform that runs entirely on local hardware — starting with Nvidia's DGX Spark desktop machine and Linux PCs with RTX GPUs carrying at least 24GB of VRAM.

OpenAI's Jalapeño chip beats Nvidia superchips on power and latency

Two hardware stories today, both about who sets the price of running AI: OpenAI's first custom inference chip just posted benchmark numbers ahead of Nvidia's best, and one of autonomous trucking's quietest operators just bankrolled its expansion. OpenAI's custom Jalapeño chip delivered 1.5–1.9x more AI work per watt than Nvidia's GB200 and GB300 superchips, with 1.7–3.6x lower end-to-end latency, according to results the company presented at the Hot Chips conference on Tuesday.

Musk says first Nvidia-powered AI satellites launch in Q4 2027

Orbital AI compute got a calendar date today — and Hugging Face gave app builders a new canvas. Elon Musk says SpaceX has designed a space-optimized version of Nvidia's flagship Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale system, with the first units scheduled to launch into orbit in the fourth quarter of 2027 and significant scale to follow in 2028. Writing on X, Musk said the space-ready variant is "significantly simpler, lower cost, denser and lighter" than the terrestrial rack it's based on.
