Open Source Radar — September 23: the agent's missing plumbing

Today's board is the three layers an agent needs before anyone trusts it with real work: a document surface it can actually edit, a runtime that keeps it isolated and cheap to wake, and a way to hand it tools without handing it keys. Univer (TypeScript, ~16,000 stars, Apache-2.0) — An office SDK that has spent three years being the open-source spreadsheet you embed in your own product, and has now repositioned itself, in its own README, as the Office Harness for AI Agents.

Lambert's Hill briefing: Chinese open weights out-download US 2-to-1

Nathan Lambert's Hill briefing: Chinese open weights out-download US 2-to-1 Three stories about who sets the terms: the open-weight balance sheet Congress got briefed on privately, the banks trying to write the rules for shopping agents before a regulator does, and the clinics getting frontier medical AI for free. Chinese open-weight models now hold twice America's cumulative downloads and more than 80% of open-model usage on OpenRouter, according to the remarks Nathan Lambert prepared for a…

Google's Intrinsic open-sources its robot control stack

Two physical-AI stories landed on the same day, and together they draw the line the industry is converging on: the software layer is going free, and the sensing layer is going into the hands of one buyer. Alphabet's Intrinsic open-sourced Intrinsic Core, the runtime, SDK and real-time control framework it had been keeping in-house — an Apache-2.0 layer that handles trajectory adjustment mid-movement, 6-DoF pose estimation, collision-avoidance motion planning, grasp planning, simulation and…

Today in AI — September 21, 2026

Monday's through-line was accountability: who answers when a model misbehaves, and who pays when it works. Washington drew that line at management, two labs reportedly negotiated to attack each other's models, China's flagships kept winning the volume race while one of them took a shelf at Amazon, and two compression papers argued that smaller can now mean better rather than merely cheaper. Models & Research * ByteDance Seed and Tsinghua AIR open-sourced DAPO, a reinforcement-learning…

Tsinghua open-sources RPent, an agent layer for real robots

Two open-source releases today point the same direction: the interesting work is no longer in the model itself, but in the scaffolding around it. A Tsinghua-led team published the layer that sits between a frontier model and a robot's motors — and a leaderboard to show it lifts a frozen policy. A solo developer, meanwhile, trained a small continual-learning model on a laptop GPU and documented what it forgets. A Tsinghua-led group open-sourced RPent, a framework that turns a general model into…

Zhipu open-sources ZCode — but only the version after the fix

Zhipu did the thing it promised and published its coding agent's source. What it published starts after the bug. Zhipu (2513.HK) pushed the full source of ZCode to a public repository on Sunday night, nine days after a developer showed the agent was packing entire workspaces and Git history into an encrypted archive only Zhipu could open. The code lives under the company's zai-org organisation, carries an Apache 2.0 licence, and declares version 3.14.0 in its package manifest.

Bessent and He put open-weight models on the AI agenda

Washington and Beijing sat down in New York on Sunday to write the AI chapter of this week's Trump–Xi summit — and for the first time the open-weight question is inside the room, next to the tariff clock. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Vice Premier He Lifeng opened a day of talks at JPMorgan's Manhattan headquarters on Sunday, aiming to tee up agreements on AI, tariffs and critical minerals for the Trump–Xi summit on September 24.
