arXiv just funded its independence — as AI floods its queue

arXiv just stopped being a university project. On September 23 the preprint server announced $17.2 million in multiyear commitments from the Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets, and the Siegel Family Endowment, funding its first years as an independent nonprofit. The timing is not a coincidence: the same platform now absorbs more than 28,000 submissions a month, and computer science — AI work above all — is nearly half of them. The money is the smallest part of this story; the load is…

COP31 puts AI's energy bill on the climate summit agenda

Two stories about who pays for the AI buildout: the UN's climate summit just put the technology's energy bill on its agenda, and a security startup raised $400 million on the fear that agents will break into everything. "Energy-guzzling artificial intelligence is driving up planet-heating pollution from coal, oil and gas, while ratcheting up energy costs for households and businesses," UN climate chief Simon Stiell said in a New York speech this week, adding that AI leaders are "on thin ice…

Modal and Baseten in talks at $15B and $26B, months after last rounds

Two inference platforms are asking investors to reprice the layer that sits between the model labs and everyone using them. The second story is Qualcomm's bid to put an always-on agent in your ears. Modal Labs is in talks to raise at a roughly $15 billion valuation, and Baseten is negotiating a round that could value it at $26 billion. Modal raised $355 million in May at a valuation of $4.65 billion, so the new number is roughly triple it — four months later.

Qualcomm buys the MoveIt robotics stack and promises to keep it open

The chip vendor bought the middleware that most robots in research and industry are actually planned with — and the promise to keep it open is now the part that matters. Meta shipped the smallest AI hardware at Connect, and OpenAI took its ad business into Southeast Asia. Qualcomm will acquire PickNik Inc., the Boulder company that has stewarded the MoveIt manipulation framework since its Willow Garage days, and says MoveIt 1 and MoveIt 2 will remain open source under their existing license.

Enveda raises $311 million to turn nature's chemistry into drugs

A biotech that reads molecules out of plants and microbes just raised the largest round of the week — and a 2.5B open model showed up to embarrass models twice its size. Enveda has raised $311 million in a Series E led by Catalio Capital Management, at a $2 billion valuation that doubles what the company was worth twelve months ago. The Boulder, Colorado company does not design molecules from scratch; it searches for them.

NHTSA's probe into Comma is a test for open-source driving

The federal government has opened a formal defect investigation into comma.ai, the startup that sells a gadget promising Tesla-style hands-off driving for cars you already own. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's defects office opened preliminary evaluation PE26007 on Monday, September 21, after five crashes in which cars running the company's openpilot software drove into stopped or slow traffic directly ahead.

Ex-Huawei Pangu CTO raises hundreds of millions for a physics model

Two of Huawei's best-known large-model people have a new company, and it isn't Huawei's. Shenzhen's XIRRA has raised several hundred million yuan to build a foundation model for the physical world — and the framing around it needs one correction. Li Yin, the former CTO of Huawei Cloud's Pangu large-model team, left to found XIRRA (Shenzhen Xirrang Kaiwu Technology), and the company has now closed seed and angel rounds worth several hundred million yuan in total.

Cognex buys Intel spinoff RealSense in a $600M physical-AI bet

Three moves on the same Tuesday, all of them bets that the unglamorous layer is where the margin sits: the sensor that lets a robot see, the registry that says who owns an agent, and the data center that serves the tokens in between. Cognex will pay about $500 million in cash for RealSense, the 3D perception company Intel spun out 14 months ago, in a deal the two sides value at roughly $600 million once a three-year employee retention program is counted.
