Anthropic promised $518 billion. Most of it is owed either way.

The number the wires led with was the loss. The number that decides what Anthropic is actually worth is the one it has to pay whether or not anyone shows up to use it. Anthropic's confidential IPO prospectus, reviewed by Reuters, says the company expects to spend at least $518 billion over roughly a decade building AI infrastructure with six partners, and that about 80 percent of it — roughly $414 billion on the filing's own numbers — is non-cancelable or payable regardless of usage.

Roche is building labs where the AI runs the experiments

Two moves in the same 24 hours, pointing in opposite directions: a pharma giant starts rebuilding its research labs around machines that run their own experiments, and Beijing extends its grip on the people who build AI. Roche said at its pharma investor day on Monday that it has started building autonomous AI-driven laboratories, under a model it calls "lab-in-the-loop" — AI models propose the experiments, automated systems run them, and the results feed back into the models.

AMD buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2B in stock

Two stories about the same question landed within hours of each other Monday: who gets to build the machinery that makes the next generation of models — and who gets to watch it happen. AMD signed a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, the spatial-intelligence company Fei-Fei Li co-founded in 2024, for about $8.2 billion in an all-stock deal — the second-largest acquisition in AMD's history and its first purchase of a frontier model lab.

OpenAI backed a startup built to fight an AI-made pandemic

A biosecurity startup raised $36 million to design antibodies against the pathogens AI might help build — and it was already quietly firing at the attack surface it is defending. Separately, DHS started using AI to recommend what to redact from the records you asked for, and an anonymous model took third place on the world's busiest token leaderboard with a fingerprint no one was supposed to see. Red Queen Bio, a biosecurity startup whose $15 million seed OpenAI led in November, has now raised…

Insilico's AI-designed drug enters Phase III — a first for the field

A drug whose target was found by AI and whose molecule was designed by AI is now in a late-stage trial — and the registry, not the press release, is what makes it a milestone. The same day brought a machine-checked maths result from a team of agents, and a brain-implant round with an unusual lead investor. Insilico Medicine has begun dosing patients in a 320-person Phase III trial of rentosertib, an oral treatment for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis — the first drug with both an AI-identified…

Beijing tells Alibaba and ByteDance to file Nvidia purchase plans

For a year, China's approach to Nvidia has been subtraction — stop ordering, buy domestic. Sunday's report is Beijing trying addition instead, on a chip that was never on the banned list. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has asked Alibaba, ByteDance and other domestic companies to report their plans to buy Nvidia's RTX Pro 5500, and told them the government intends to approve the purchases.

Anthropic's earliest employees are reportedly eyeing remote land

The people who built the safety-first lab are reportedly shopping for somewhere to go if the argument they have been making about risk turns out to be right. Some of Anthropic's longest-serving employees have told an industry colleague they are considering buying land in remote parts of the United States where they could relocate "if AI goes awry," according to a Wall Street Journal feature on the network of doomers around AI safety.
