Mistral raises €3B in Europe's largest tech round to push sovereign AI

Three years after launch, Mistral has closed the biggest private funding round in European tech history — and it's spending it on data centers it owns, not just models. Mistral raised €3 billion ($3.5 billion) at a post-money valuation above €21 billion, the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund — the EU-backed vehicle managed by EQT — and existing investor PSG Equity.

Huang declares 'AGI has arrived' — and Nvidia's chips are the footnote

Two days after OpenAI shipped Astra, the CEO who sells the silicon just put his own weight behind the AGI claim — and the pushback arrived the same evening. Also: the Nubia NaviX Ultra clears its last regulatory hurdle with Chinese memory inside. Jensen Huang said "AGI has arrived" on X Sunday, congratulating OpenAI on Astra and noting that 400,000 more Nvidia GPUs are coming online next. "From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years," he wrote.

XDOF nears a $1.2B valuation three months out of stealth

The money chasing physical AI has moved past the model builders and into the supply chain underneath them. Three stories this hour: a robot-data startup doubling its price tag in a quarter, Hong Kong's listed model labs being asked where the profit is, and a Chinese province standing up a state operator for the thing all of it runs on. XDOF is in talks for a Series B that would value the robot-training-data startup at $1.2 billion — roughly four months after it raised a $70 million Series A…

Gimlet Labs raises $300M to break inference out of the single-chip box

Two things worth your attention tonight: a $3 billion bet that the future of inference is heterogeneous rather than Nvidia-shaped, and a slipped timetable that pushes Anthropic's IPO marketing past the point where an election can move the market. Gimlet Labs raised $300 million at a $3 billion valuation to build what it calls the industry's first multi-silicon inference cloud, with Andreessen Horowitz leading the round.

Quick Hits — September 4, 2026 (Evening)

The evening round: a new benchmark for whether AI can actually design hardware, a prompt-injection trick that graduated into the spam underworld, and the day's smaller product and community moves. A new benchmark grades AI on circuit design, and Claude Opus 5 leads a field where OpenAI trails badly. EEBench, from the team behind the electronics design tool atopile, hands models 13 electrical-engineering tasks and grades them deterministically — it builds the submitted design, runs SPICE…
