Claude Opus 5 tops EEBench, where circuits are graded by physics

A new benchmark grades AI-generated circuits the way hardware is actually graded — in a simulator, against real datasheets, at every tolerance corner. The early results are better than anyone expected and nowhere near good enough. OpenAI put a printed circuit board in a GPT-6 Astra demo, and the team behind atopile answered with the missing half: EEBench, a benchmark that hands models real electrical engineering tasks and then grades the result by running it through SPICE against components pul

Quick Hits — September 4, 2026

The evening round: a new benchmark for whether AI can actually design hardware, a prompt-injection trick that graduated into the spam underworld, and the day's smaller product and community moves. A new benchmark grades AI on circuit design, and Claude Opus 5 leads a field where OpenAI trails badly. EEBench, from the team behind the electronics design tool atopile, hands models 13 electrical-engineering tasks and grades them deterministically — it builds the submitted design, runs SPICE simulat

China turns APEC into an AI export channel for small business

Two very different AI stories landed on the same day. In Guangzhou, China used a 21-economy ministerial meeting to launch permanent regional AI institutions aimed at small firms — the clearest move yet to make its open-weight model stack the default for developing Asia-Pacific economies. And in a smaller but telling story, a Chinese tech personality asked why no domestic carmaker ships a full-strength LLM in the cabin, touching off a public argument about why they won't. At the 32nd APEC Small

Claude formalized Fermat's Last Theorem in 11 days

Anthropic says a team of Claude agents produced the first complete, machine-checked formalization of Fermat’s Last Theorem — and Kevin Buzzard, the Imperial College London mathematician who has spent years on the same problem, has already compiled the result and confirmed it checks out. Also today: React’s compiler has gone Rust-native, and one real codebase got most of its build time back. Claude just closed the last open problem on formal mathematics' most famous benchmark list. Working on Pr

MLPerf Storage starts measuring inference, not just training

Two releases this week attack the same blind spot: almost everything we can measure about AI infrastructure was built for training, and almost all the money is now being spent on inference. MLCommons shipped MLPerf Storage v3.0, and the headline is that the suite now tests inference workloads. Alongside the training and checkpointing tests it has run for years, v3.0 adds a KV cache test that measures storage performance for the read/write churn of LLM inference caching, and a vector database te

Nscale lines up $3.5B in pre-IPO cash with Nvidia at the table

The neocloud that went from obscurity to a $45 billion Anthropic contract in under a year is now selling that story to IPO investors — and one of its suppliers is helping fund the pitch. Also: Roland finally ships a generative music tool, and it is deliberately not a song machine. Nscale is in talks to raise as much as $3.5 billion ahead of a planned IPO, and Nvidia is on both sides of the deal. Bloomberg reported Friday that the London-based AI cloud firm is seeking to sell up to $1.5 billion

GitHub's HydraFusion routes between models to match Opus 5 at 67% less cost

GitHub is shipping a new way of building coding agents: instead of picking one model and hoping it holds, its Copilot runtime now drafts, critiques, and escalates between models on the fly. The first benchmark numbers suggest the orchestration is doing real work, not just splitting the bill. GitHub's Project HydraFusion matches Opus 5 on agentic coding at a fraction of the cost. The research preview, live in Copilot CLI today, treats workflow selection as an optimization problem. For each reque

US, China schedule first dedicated AI safety talks of Trump's second term

The U.S. and China are opening a direct channel on AI risk for the first time in this administration, and a Beijing-based model lab is filing for one of the largest Chinese AI listings on record. Two different stories, one shared anxiety: that frontier agents and adversarial distillation are outrunning the guardrails built for them. The U.S. and China will hold their first dedicated AI safety talks of the Trump era in mid-September, Reuters reported Thursday, with Treasury Secretary Scott Besse

Anthropic's $2 trillion IPO turns its trustee experiment into a public-market question

Anthropic is heading for an IPO that could value the Claude maker at $2 trillion — and the Long-Term Benefit Trust, the small group of self-appointed advisers who control a majority of Anthropic's board, is about to be examined by a much broader and less forgiving investor base. The trust has never had to draw a hard red line against Anthropic's commercial leadership; that is about to change. The Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT) holds no equity but appoints or dismisses four of Anthropic's seven

The Take — Calling Astra AGI is flippant. The field's silence is worse.

M.G. Siegler is right that calling GPT-6 Astra "AGI" is marketing. He is wrong that OpenAI alone is to blame. When Greg Brockman stood in front of reporters last Thursday and told them "we are now in the AGI era," he was performing exactly the move Siegler calls flippant — but he was performing it on a stage the rest of the frontier-AI field had abandoned to him. Nobody serious has bothered to define the term in a decade, and the bill is now due. I think the AGI argument is the wrong argument.

Abu Dhabi's G42 courts US buyers to keep its AI chip pipeline open past 2027

Abu Dhabi's flagship AI company is shopping itself to Washington — and PUBG's parent is betting $250 million that India's AI appetite is real. G42 is exploring selling a majority stake to an American company, or spinning out an entirely new US-based vehicle, to lock in continued access to advanced AI chips after April 2027. That's the framing in a Bloomberg report picked up by Techmeme on Friday. Two structures are reportedly on the table: a US majority shareholder for the existing company, or

Experian ships an Agent OS with ServiceNow as its first partner

The week's enterprise-AI theme is "kill switches and minimum access." Today it came from a credit bureau. Experian launched an "Agent OS" today, putting ServiceNow's agents at the front of the queue and selling the rest of the package — identity controls, logging, model selection, a common gateway, a Model Context Protocol server — to every other ServiceNow customer. The credit-rating giant has spent years running machine learning underneath consumer-finance products; today's news repackages th
